edi was hired by Bradbury Stamm Construction as the LEED™ Accredited Professional to facilitate the LEED™ process in the Baca D’lo’ay azhi Community School for the Navajo Nation. Dyron Murphy Architects was the architect on this Design/Build Project of approximately 80,000 sqft. edi successfully guided the project team towards achieving environmental project goals. LEED™ Certification was an integral part of the design and construction process of this replacement school project in order to promote a higher standard of energy efficiency and a healthier, more productive indoor learning environment for the students.
Water Efficiency
The project used only low and/or no water use plants to minimize the amount of potable water required to maintain the landscape. Site contours have been designed to direct rainwater caught on the roof to landscaped areas. This resulted in no dependency upon the well water supply for landscape use, which is extremely important in a desert environment. We installed low-flow fixtures for the project, saving 30% over normal water use.
Energy Efficiency
The design alleviates the impact of the building on the environment by providing a highly efficient building envelope, high performance glazing, and exterior shading devices, increasing the energy performance of the building by 20%.
Materials and Resources
An area for the storage and separation of recyclables was provided to cut down on the amount of waste that the school produces and educate the students on the responsible disposal of waste. On the other side of the equation, the project invested in products with at least 25% recycled content and were manufactured locally.
