portfolio / Gunbarrel Veterinary Clinic
Boulder, Colorado
This new clinic and boarding facility replaces an existing outdated veterinary facility. The lobby of Gunbarrel Veterinary Clinic has a centralized reception desk adjoining a showcased feline boarding room to the west and an open view to the canine exercise yard to the east. It has four exam rooms, a pharmacy, a lab, and a treatment room acting as an acoustical buffer between the public reception area and the noisier kennels and wards. The open plan treatment room of the clinic allows doctors and staff an unobstructed view throughout the primary work area, while providing a light, spacious interior environment. The employee break room and shared technical offices are located on the second floor and capture views both of the treatment room below and the mountains to the west. The kennel’s radiant concrete floors, flip-down benches, and glass block windows provide a comfortable space for boarded animals.
Energy Efficiency
Energy efficient lighting fixtures, ample daylighting to 50% of the floor area, insulated foundation system, properly sized mechanical units, blown-in fiberglass insulation, radiant floor heating in the kennels and wards create an energy efficient building.
Water Efficiency & Conservation
Three 5,000 gallon cisterns that collect storm runoff from 50% of the overall roof area distribute harvested water to the landscape irrigation system. The building design complements its rural setting and incorporates existing site features such as established trees and the 40’ grain silo. Also, the reception desk is fashioned from distressed timber salvaged from the site’s dilapidated hay barn.
