Jeehdeez'a Academy opened in 1945 in one small Hogan with seven students. Now serving over 300 students, including 60 boarding students, Jeehdeez'a Academy will be replacing the assortment of modular buildings erected over the past 50 plus years with a 75,000 square foot facility. The campus, which includes classrooms, administration, a gymnasium, a cafeteria and dormitory, consists of three buildings around an octagonal courtyard referring back to the original Hogan. Combining Native American value with modern technology, the project team of Jeehdeez'a Academy is using LEED™ as a design tool to create a high-performance school that treads lightly on the environment.
In the delicate ecosystem of the high desert, site issues such as restoration and preserving natively vegetated open space have been prioritized, as have minimizing the negative impact of storm water and heat-island effects. Water is of utmost concern. The design facilitated a reduction of internal water use by using low flow toilets and minimizing potable water for landscaping, while creating a pleasing micro-climate within the school's courtyard. For the health and productivity of the students, staff, and teachers, a strong emphasis was placed on indoor environmental quality. The project incorporates low-VOC interior finishes, CO2 monitoring, and the reduction and control of chemicals such as cleaning products. Jeehdeez'a Academy, in addition to providing an educational facility for kindergarten through sixth grade, is serving the surrounding community for special events, sports activities, and public meetings. Jeehdeez'a Academy is an example of sustainable practices for future generations.
