ēdi: regenerating architecture

portfolio / N.C. Mountain Residence

Graham County, North Carolina

Situated in the Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina, this house will serve as a vacation home for the owners. The house is situated atop a ridge with views to the north and south, the north being the dominant panorama overlooking publicly protected forest lands and the scenic Fontana Lake. The house is designed with extensive glazing to the north to maximize the views, and limited openings to the south for privacy.

The home is pursuing a LEED for Homes green certification. Green features of the home include an extensive platform to raise the house off the hillside to protect local habitat and natural site drainage as much as possible. The site itself is actually a previously developed, so no new roads or development were necessary to place the house. Other green features include a very insulated envelope in the floor, walls, and roof to maximize energy efficiency, extensive daylighting, highly efficient and energy star compliant heating / cooling systems and appliances, and green finish materials including natural plaster and linoleum flooring.
