Sustainability Consulting
ēdi’s services embody all areas of green design including team education, site planning, materials research and selection, energy assessment, water conservation and reuse, construction waste management, recycling, and building operations. Our whole systems design approach in combination with our knowledge of sustainable design and development, guides our clients to achieve environmental, economic, and health and wellness goals.
Design Principles
Our design process begins with the understanding that natural cycles and relationships are complex and that the built environment has a significant impact on those relationships. At ēdi’s, the ecological soundness of the designs is considered while we strive to create an ideal microclimate for human comfort and well-being. The project design carefully considers site conditions, proper space allocation, clear and efficient circulation as well as views, natural light and access to the exterior environment. The building envelope is selected for beauty, durability and high insulation value. Building materials are selected based on their proximity to the site, the amount of energy required to manufacture them and their level of toxicity. Water-saving fixtures are specified in conjunction with water capture and distribution strategies to help preserve resources. Special consideration is given to make the project adaptable for future modifications and to meet our client’s financial restraints. Our goal is to design projects that contribute to the long-term protection and enhancement of the environment as well as a high quality of life for current residents and future generations. Each project is unique and individually designed to shelter and inspire.
Site Assessment
The process of ecological design begins with the careful selection and assessment of a site. We observe patterns of use and circulation of the land and study topography, soil structures, and influences on microclimate. We consider the angles of the sun and the duration of solar exposure, note the direction and intensity of wind, and evaluate the frequency and amount of precipitation. Preservation and protection are integral to site design. We seek to preserve the natural site topography, avoid clear cutting and site leveling, and to retain desirable features such as established trees and rock formations. We minimize negative impacts by installing underground utilities, minimizing paved areas, and utilizing porous paving materials. Natural drainage patterns of the site are respected, maintained, and enhanced to encourage water retention and reuse. We use permaculture and other integrated site planning techniques to impede water runoff and create low-maintenance landscape. Where possible, existing open spaces are preserved or created to provide natural habitat, promote biodiversity, celebrate seasonal changes, filter and condition the air and help moderate harsh climatic conditions.
Phases & Scope of Basic Services:
Pre Design (PD): During this phase we assemble information that inform design, considering factors such as the site assessment and programmatic information provided by our clients.
Schematic Design (SD): Based on Pre Design information, conceptual designs are developed, appropriate construction systems are investigated, and integration of traditional and alternative systems within the project are researched. This phase includes presentation of initial ideas and design options for the site plan, floor plans, and building elevations.
Design Development (DD): Detailed drawings are developed to illustrate aspects of the proposed design, showing all rooms to scale. Materiality of elements are determined and building sections are drawn to clarify spatial relationships. The design is analyzed for energy and water efficiency. During this phase we look for ways to adjust the project scope to meet the budget if necessary.
Construction Documents (CD): Drawings and details are finalized to obtain a permit from the local jurisdiction.
Construction Administration (CA): At appropriate intervals to the construction process, we observe the progress and quality of the Work completed by the Contractor and provide our clients with detailed field reports and observations. We will quickly respond to requests for information from the contractor and provide supplemental information as required.
